Aww: Watch baby orangutan Budi receive loving care after enduring a year of abuse and neglect (VIDEO)

It’s well known that Borneo’s orangutans are in great danger, losing their homes to rapid deforestation and being preyed upon by poachers. Sometimes those poachers sell off the baby orangutans they find to people who decide to keep the wee primates as pets.

Thankfully there are lots of brave and passionate people out there working to save orangutans, including the poor babies being kept as pets.

One of those babies is Budi, who was saved by members of the NGO International Animal Rescue (IAR) in Ketapang, West Kalimantan. Little Budi had been kept in a tiny chicken cage by an owner who fed him nothing but condensed milk.

After 10 months of this ill-treatment, the owner realized how sick Budi had become and called IAR. Several of the NGO’s members came to pick up the critically sick animal to bring him back to their Orangutan Rescue Centre.

As you can see in the video, Budi is doing better these days but still weak and traumatized by his time spent in captivity.

You can read more about Budi’s rescue and his recovery process on IAR’s page dedicated to him. On it, Dr Karmele L Sanchez, IAR’s Programme Director in Indonesia, says, “At the moment we are still worried for his life and trying to minimise his pain. But Budi is a very strong little baby and he is fighting very hard to survive.”
