Atmajaya University student dies after partaking in extracurricular military training

Daniel Vicil Pardamean Tambunan, a law student at the Atmajaya Catholic University in Jakarta, passed away yesterday.

Daniel was scheduled to take part in the university’s extracurricular military training from October 22 to 25. But on Saturday, he fell sick and was taken to be treated at the Jakarta Hospital.

“It appeared he was sick. But what his illness was, we don’t know,” said Makdin Sinaga, deputy rector at Atmajaya University, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.

It’s currently not known if Daniel died as a direct consequence of the military training. The university is conducting their own internal investigation into the matter. The South Jakarta Police are also conducting a criminal investigation into Daniel’s death.

Students are required to undergo grueling physical exercises for the military training program. Some believe that Daniel passed away during the initiation rites to enter the program.
