8 injured in 50 kg gas canister explosion that destroyed PHD restaurant in Bekasi

A Pizza Hut Delivery (PHD) restaurant was destroyed in a huge explosion in Bekasi yesterday that also injured 8 people.

The explosion, which occurred on Jalan Raya Hankam in Bekasi, reportedly came from inside the PHD restaurant at 6:20 am.

“We suspect that the explosion came from a 50 kg gas canister from inside PHD,” said Bekasi City Police Chief Commissioner Umar Fana, as quoted by Detik yesterday.

The 50 meters square PHD restaurant was reduced to rubble after the explosion while several other surrounding buildings, including an Alfamidi supermarket, a two-story house and several shops, also suffered heavy damages.

Luckily, there was no one inside PHD at the time of the explosion as the restaurant’s employees left the building at 2 am. However, 8 people – 6 Alfamidi employees and 2 residents – were injured after getting struck by debris from the explosion. PHD has announced that they are going to cover the victims’ medical bills, as well as cover all material damages caused by the explosion.

A further investigation into the explosion last night was called off after authorities smelled a gas leak, which they believed was coming from two 50 kg gas canisters that were spotted among the rubble.
