5 arrested for kidnapping teen and ransoming him for Rp 4 million in South Jakarta

Desperation is the reason behind many of Jakarta’s otherwise senseless crimes. It seems like an extremely desperate need for money must have motivated the kidnapping of a 15-year-old teenage boy late last year by five suspects in South Jakarta’s Mampang Prapatan.

Police say the teenager was kidnapped from a gas station on Jalan Mampang Prapatan VIII on December 24.

“Using a Toyota Etios with license place B SYB 1840, the perpetrators took the victim, 15-year-old AH, to a house in the village of Pondok Labu in South Jakarta,” Mampang Prapatan Police Chief Priyo today as quoted by Tribunnews.

Upon arriving at the house, AH was supposedly beaten up by two of the suspects, 23-year-old IF and 20-year-old MWP.

Police say the kidnappers then contacted AH’s parents and demanded Rp 4 million in ransom.

Fearing for her son’s safety, the victim’s mother sent the ransom money to one of the suspect’s accounts. The next day, the kidnappers released AH at a remote point near a forest in Srengseng, West Jakarta.

AH and his parents immediately reported the kidnapping to the police, who were eventually able to arrest the five suspects in various points throughout Jakarta and Bogor.

It seems unbelievable that five criminals would go through with a kidnapping and then ask for a ransom that would have been worth less than Rp 1 million for each of them. But then, there are a lot of desperate people out there…
