The JW Sky Lounge in Terminal 2E of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport caught on fire at 5:50am yesterday morning, causing a domino effect of delays and cancellations for both domestic and international flights throughout the day.

According to PT Angkasa Pura II, the company that manages the airport, the departure times of up to 30 flights were delayed by 30 minutes or more as authorities were forced to close Terminal 2E for several hours and had to divert passengers to the adjoining 2D and 2F terminals.

Most of the delayed departures were domestic flights, while a number of international flights to China and Malaysia were also delayed.

“The priority to handle the delays is [to fly] the passengers who have already arrived at the airport. [We’ll attempt] to fly the passengers according to their initial schedules,” said PT Angkasa Pura II Head of Corporate Secretary and Legal Agus Haryadi, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia admitted that they had to cancel 14 flights because of the fire. They’ve allowed their passengers to claim full ticket refunds or to reschedule their flights at a later time.

According to Vivanews, the situation at Terminal 2 returned to normal by Sunday evening as flights departed on time.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire in the morning. There were no reported casualties.
