At least 23 people were reportedly struck by lightning near a soccer pitch in Cilograng district in Banten’s Lebak regency on Monday evening.

Three people reportedly died because of the incident, while eight others had to be treated at Palabuhanratu General Hospital in Sukabumi regency, West Java.

An official from the hospital said that those who survived suffered trauma from the electric shock, with symptoms including headache and soreness, with several of them vomiting due to nausea. However, they did not appear to sustain bodily injuries.

Meanwhile, others sustained minor injuries and received treatment at a local puskesmas (community clinic).

Cilograng sub-precinct chief Asep Dikdik said that the lightning struck people who were taking shelter from the rain after watching a soccer match, which was held as part of Indonesian Independence Day celebrations.

A similar incident occurred in late 2018, which saw a man killed on the spot after a lightning struck near a pitch where an amateur soccer game was taking place in the city of Bogor, West Java.
