Utara / Penjaringan
A relatively new neighborhood development to Jakarta, Pantai Indah Kapuk is one of the capital’s most up-and-coming areas, with a well-organized residential districts full of posh homes, numerous entertainment options and one of the most rapidly developing dining scenes in the city. Located in the Penjaringan subdistrict of North Jakarta, it is within close proximity to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang. Most of the neighborhood consists of residential areas, with the majority of the businesses clustered around the main roads, including Pantai Indah Utara, Pantai Indah Selatan, and Marina Indah. The shophouses on Marina Indah Road are particularly well-known for their dense stretch of restaurants and cafes. Although you can find almost any kind of restaurant in the area, PIK is most famous for its impressive variety of Chinese, Japanese and Korean options. There are numerous golf courses within the area, as well as the Waterbom amusement park. When it was first built up in the late 1980s, PIK’s developers were criticized by environmentalists for building in the area - which was previously dominated by swamps and mangrove forests and zoned as green belt - due to fears that developing the land commercially could exacerbate flooding in the region. You can still see part of PIK as it was before at Taman Wisata Alam Angke Kapuk, one of the few eco-tourism attractions in Jakarta, where you can spend your day sailing around the mangrove forest or hiking through the camping grounds.
