The Greater Tangerang area comprises of two massive, distinct cities: Tangerang and South Tangerang. Tangerang is a bustling metropolitan in its own right. With a population of just over 2 million (making it the eighth most populated “suburb” in the world), its crowded atmosphere and general look is fairly similar to the capital Jakarta, for which Tangerang is a satellite city. The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is located in the city of Tangerang, despite the airport being often falsely described as Jakarta’s. In addition, Tangerang is also known as an industrial hub, with over 1,000 factories located there. South Tangerang, by comparison, has more of a suburb feel compared to Tangerang and Jakarta. The city, which separated administratively from Tangerang in 2008, is home to some of the wealthiest suburban neighborhoods in all of the Greater Jakarta Area, including Alam Sutera, Bintaro, and Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD City).
