WATCH: FFI-winning animated short ‘Surat untuk Jakarta’ is a gorgeous ode to the capital

The biggest Indonesian film awards of the year, Festival Film Indonesia (FFI), was held at Tamin Ismail Marzuki on Sunday evening. Among the night’s winners was “Surat untuk Jakarta” (“Letter to Jakarta”) which took home the Piala Citra Award for Best Animated Film.

Directed by Andre Sugianto, Aditya Prabaswara, and Ardhira Anugrah Putra, “Surat untuk Jakarta” is a 2-minute animated short which doesn’t tell a story so much as show a series of scenes evoking the sights and sensations of living in the Indonesian capital with simple, gorgeously stylizied animation.

During their acceptance speech, Andre said that the film was made to be their gift to Jakarta in honor of the capital’s 489th Anniversary.

“This is our ode, our offering, to the city of Jakarta,” Andre said as quoted by Kompas.

“Surat untuk Jakarta” also won the Best Picture Award at Hellofest in September.

The winner of the Piala Citra Award for Best Film at this year’s FFI went to “Athirah”, which was the big winner of the night with five other awards as well.
