Same-sex marriage? Not in Indonesia, tweets Religious Affairs Minister

Millions were overjoyed (and millions equally outraged) in the USA when the country’s Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal nationwide. Could a similar historic ruling ever happen in Indonesia?

Never, at least according to Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Saifuddin.

In Indonesia’s context, marriage is a sacred event and part of religious worship. The State will never recognize same-sex marriage.

Lukman’s tweet was hotly commented and debated by netizens, many of whom support the minister’s views and are extremely against same-sex marriage:

What about homosexual acts without marriage in Indonesia? What will the ministry do about them?

If there are humans or a country that recognize [same-sex marriage], then that person or country is sick. Even animals don’t recognize it.

Don’t ever legalize it here, don’t follow the USA. Fight against it!

Despite the overwhelming support for the minister on Twitter, there was a very small minority who disagreed with him:

Sir, marriage isn’t about sacred-ness, but it’s about the rights of citizens to be protected by law. For example, the right to healthcare protection for couples.

Well, unfortunately it seems we’re still far behind other nations in terms open-mindedness. Same-sex marriage may simply not be possible in Indonesia, not for several generations at least.
