Jakarta celebrated the 491st anniversary of its founding on June 22 (marking the approximate date in 1527 when Fatahillah kicked the Portuguese out of Sunda Kelapa and renamed it Jayakarta or “City of Victory”). As in years past, part of the capital’s 491st birthday celebration includes giving its inhabitants free access to various attractions.

While it’s probably a little late (and the weather a little too gloomy) to take advantage of, the Jakarta Tourism Department has granted free access to the North Jakarta Ancol beach area until 6pm today. But there may be some of you out there who will want to take advantage of tomorrow’s offer of free access to the capital’s museums.

Note that this offer does not apply to all the museums in Jakarta, only those run by the government. These include:

  • The Jakarta History Museum (also known as Museum Fatahillah)
  • Museum Wayang (Puppet Museum)
  • Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics
  • Maritime Museum
  • Textile Museum
  • Museum Joang ’45
  • Museum MH Thamrin
  • Museum of Memorial Stone Park (Museum  Museum Taman Prasasti)
  • Museum of National History (in the National Monument)

Which of these museums are worth going to? Well, here’s one man’s frank and honest opinion on the capital’s various museums to give you some ideas. Enjoy!
