Joyland Festival 2019

Another year-end festival to look forward to in Jakarta is Joyland Festival, which is making a return this month after a six-year absence. The two-day music and arts festival, which took a lengthy break over its organizers being preoccupied with other projects, invited several leading Indonesian creative minds to help curate the lineup: indie rock band Efek Rumah Kaca for music, writer and comedian Soleh Solihun for stand-up comedy, and filmmaker Anggun Priambodo for film.

The result is certainly a festival to get really excited about. The festival will host international acts such as American chillwave pioneer Washed Out, American indie pop-rock band Frankie Cosmos (fronted by singer-songwriter Greta Kline), Canadian indie rock band TOPS, Turin-based American experimental electronic producer Yves Tumor, Australian dream pop singer-songwriter Hatchie, and Norwegian electro-pop singer-songwriter Anna of the North.

Not to be out-hyped, local headlining acts at Joyland include pop band Naif, former VJ-turned-jazz singer Jamie Aditya, actress/jazz singer Eva Celia, rock band .Feast frontman Baskara Putra AKA Hindia, pop-jazz singer-songwriter Ardhito Pramono, and other festival mainstays.

Saturday, Nov. 7 – Sunday, Nov. 8 at Archery Field in Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan, Central Jakarta, from 1pm to midnight. Tickets are available online on Kiostix and offline at Kios Ojo Keos in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta.

Yo-Yo Ma’s Bach Project: Jakarta

World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma began a two-year journey in August 2018 to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello in 36 locations around the world — the music that was among the first he learned when he began playing at age four. Dubbed The Bach Project, it’s motivated by Yo-Yo’s six decade in music and Bach’s 300-year-old music, which serves as one extraordinary example of how culture connects and helps us to build a better future.

With each concert, Yo-Yo and his team partner with local artists, culture makers, leaders from different sectors, as well as cultural and community organisations for collaborations in projects. In Indonesia, the project will partner with ethical fashion label SukkhaCitta for an exhibition called T’angan (more on that below).

Friday, Dec. 6 at Jakarta International Theatre at JIExpo Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, from 8pm-11pm. Tickets starting from IDR1.9 million (Grand Circle Level 3 – D Reserve) on Traveloka.

T’angan: Hands Shaping Our Culture

Each of our clothes has a story, makes an impact, and has a cost — be it socially and environmentally. By understanding its journey, ethical fashion label SukkhaCitta believes that we can better understand the effects of our decisions so you can start making better ones. The label, which champions fair pay to its artisans and environmentally-friendly clothes, is collaborating with American renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his Bach Project in an exhibition titled T’angan to explore how culture can help us build a kinder future — one where we feel connected to each other and to our planet.

On the exhibition’s opening day, there will be an opening of SukkhaCitta’s craft school called Rumah SukkhaCitta as well as a batik workshop by its artisans from Gesikharjo village in East Java.

The exhibition starts on Saturday, Dec. 7 to Sunday, Dec. 15 at Museum Bank Indonesia, Kota, West Jakarta. Museum entry is IDR5,000/person; RSVP for the opening exhibition is available on Eventbrite, free of charge.
