Celebrity cleric Aa Gym calls for protest of Blackberry Messenger after seeing LGBT sponsored content

Even though the LGBT panic that swept Indonesia earlier this year seems to have died down, there are still some who are very vocal in their opposition of the marginalized group.

Today, renowned celebrity cleric Abdullah Gymnastiar, more popularly known as Aa Gym, posted this message on his Twitter account in which he complained about an ad that purportedly showed gay themes on Blackberry Messenger (BBM).

STRONG COMPLAINT TOWARDS BBM for promoting LGBT content, especially during Ramadan. Truly an insult and disgusting.

The sponsored ad in BBM is truly tainting this holy month. Come one friends let’s protest, stop using BBM that is promoting LGBT if need be.

It’s not exactly clear what the sponsored content ad is for since Aa Gym cropped out most of the image, but we weren’t able to find it on our BBM news feed even after scrolling down to posts from the beginning of the year.

As expected, many netizens also showed their disgust towards the ad, but a few criticized Aa Gym for this post.

@aagym don’t use BBM. There are many alternatives.

However, the alternatives to BBM, such as other chat platforms like Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger, also contain content with LGBT themes. In fact, the government pressured Line to remove LGBT sticker sets from its online store in Indonesia in February, and said they would contact Whatsapp to get them to remove their LGBT emojis (which hasn’t happened).

LGBT content can be found in most social media platforms these days, including the aforementioned chatting apps as well as on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Aa Gym, as well as those who oppose LGBT, can probably find peace if they simply stop using these LGBT-friendly services out of principle instead of loudly complaining about them and then hypocritically using them again.
