Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style at your favorite Mexican restaurant (Friday)

The 5th of May may be meant to celebrate a Mexican military victory over the French (no, it’s not Mexican Indepence Day), but it is a perfect opportunity for everybody to liberate themselves from the work week with some muy delicioso tacos and margaritas. The streets of South Kemang get closed off to traffic (palang pintu meaning street gate) for this boisterous Betawi street carnival featuring cultural shows, dancing Ondel-Ondel and 300 booths offering everything from boutique fashions accessories to Betawi delicacies. Note below the exact roads and times they will be closed.

Part of the Jakarta Food and Fashion Festival taking place in North Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading, Kampoeng Tempo Doeloe (an old-fashioned spelling for “Old-fashioned Village” at Mal Kelapa Gading where you can try a huge array of dishes from across the archipelago, everything from Sate Ayam Madura Bintang 5 to Kue Jalabia Khas Jawa Barat. A highly-anticipated annual event for cinephiles around Indonesia, the Europe on Screen Festival is put on by several of city’s finest cultural centers and features a huge array of recent and award-winning cinema from all across Europe. Highlights of this year’s festival are “Fuocoammare”, “Son of Saul” and the critically-acclaimed “Elle” by controversy-courting Dutch director Paul Verhoeven. That’s right metalheads – Megadeth is coming to melt some faces this Sunday at the Hammersonic Festival, billed as Southeast Asia’s biggest metal festival.
