For people who want to hit the dance floor hard but hate the endless loop of Top 40 club hits that are played at most Jakarta clubs, Phunktion is an ideal alternative. The capital’s longest running drum ‘n’ bass night (yes, this is literally their 124th event) always delivers thumping bass, heavy beats and crowds of people who dance like nobody is watching.

If you’re aware that the word mecha means “awesome giant robot” in Japanese, then you might very well want to check out the Tetsujin Toy & Hobby Show at Mangga Dua Square, running until Sunday. The best Gundam builders in Jakarta (or at least builders of their smaller plastic model forms) will be competing to see who can make the best mecha, and there will be plenty of collectibles up for grabs. The event is being hosted by local toy design company GoodGuysNeverWin, who will be showing off the latest version of their Bajaeger (bajaj mecha) figurines at the event. For more info

As you can tell from some of the other events happening here this weekend, there is a huge amount of appreciation for Japanese culture in Jakarta. But Indonesians don’t just love Japanese-style anime, manga and games – a lot of them make them to. Comic Frontier (Comifuro) is a creative marketplace to showcase the talents of independent creators in comics, novels, illustrations, games etc. There will also be a cosplay competition and guest cosplayers stars from abroad.
