Feast on the finest food the capital has to offer at the Jakarta Culinary Festival

The Jakarta Culinary Festival is finally back this year, offering a huge assortment of cooking demos, workshops, celebrity chefs and, of course, food for the Indonesian capital’s foodies. Put on by Ismaya and Go-Jek, this year’s JCF will encompass two huge tents at Senayan City featuring dozens of food stalls, featuring everything from local favorites (including a selection of the best-selling outlets on Go-Food) to acclaimed restaurants from Singapore such as the Michelin-starred Esquina as well as dedicated sections for coffee, desserts and drinks. There will be lots of cooking demos and special events with famous chefs including Chris Salans from Bali’s Mozaic and Ryan Clift of Singapore’s Tippling Club.  For more info: jakartaculinaryfeastival.com

The Jakarta Cinema Club is always great about exposing the city’s cinephiles to exciting sub-genres, and this week’s edition of their Secret Movie Saturday screening and discussion series will highlight the brilliance of New Mexican Cinema, which includes such modern classics as Amores Perros, Y Tu Mama Tambien and The Devil’s Backbone. As you might have guessed from the event’s name, the movie they’ll be showing is a secret so you’ll have to attend the screening to find out.

One Asian cuisine that is nearly impossible to find in Jakarta is Filipino food (as our many Filipino friends have lamented). Recently, Filipino food has been getting much more international recognition, due in part to pioneering chefs such as Chele Gonzalez who has earned rave reviews and awards for his sophisticated take on the cuisine at Manilla’s Gallery VASK. You can sample many of his signature dishes at this weekend’s special edition of the Sunday brunch at the Art Cafe in the Raffles Hotel. He’ll also be hosting a special 5-course dinner on Tuesday. Grammy-nominated American musician Mayer Hawthorne is best known as neo-soul singer-songwriter, but he is also known for spinning some supremely funky beats during his DJ sets. He’ll be bringing some generous grooves to the Goods Diner in SCBD on Sunday night.
