The fourth edition of 100% Manusia Film Festival returns virtually next month, featuring 15 feature and short films from Indonesia as well as foreign showcases from China, Cuba, Luxembourg, and more.

The film festival, known for promoting awareness on human rights issues, is usually held in a number of cultural centers across Jakarta around September. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year 100% Manusia will be held from Dec. 3 to 10 through film festival platform Festival Scope.

All screenings are free as per usual — all you need to do is sign up on Festival Scope if you haven’t, but the film buffs among us probably already have considering that this was also the screening platform for Europe on Screen (EoS), which ends today. After you’re logged in, click the “Festivals” option on the top menu, and choose “100% Manusia Film Festival.” Hover on any film of your choice, then click the rent button. The film will be available for five days on your account from its screening date, or 30 hours after you play it.

100% Manusia will open on Thursday with French comedy Stars by The Pound by Marie-Sophie Chambon and close with Canadian comedy Stage Mother by Thom Fitzgerald on Dec. 10. You can join the opening and closing ceremony through Instagram Live, Facebook Live, or YouTube.

There are a variety of films from numerous genres that you can choose from, such as the Cuban drama August that’s inspired by the director Armando Capó’s coming of age experience amid the country’s greatest economic crises during the ‘90s. There’s a documentary titled Ximei by Andy Cohen, which tells the story of a Chinese peasant woman fighting for her fellow AIDS patients who contracted the disease under the Henan Province’s “Plasma Economy,” during which impoverished farmers were encouraged to donate their blood plasma in exchange for money.

Indonesia is represented by In God’s Design, a drama set in Sumba by Dirmawan Hatta that tells the story of four different people with their own challenges, from an albino girl whose boyfriend’s family disapproves of to the struggle faced by a single mother to provide for her family.

The short film section is called 100% Screen Sho(r)ts, featuring titles from the UK, Norway, Colombia, and Indonesia. Short documentary Mother Earth and drama Nyalon are included in this category.

Aside from film screenings, you can also join virtual discussions on various topics related to human rights. Keep an eye for updates from the festival via their Twitter, Instagram, and official website, and you can find the festival program book here.
