Coconuts Hot Spot – Baconerie in Kemang does killer American-style breakfast meats and much more

America went through something of a bacon-craze a few years back, with everything from bacon ice cream sundaes to something called the “bacon explosion” becoming viral sensations on the internet. As an American expat, I admit that I am, on occasion, obsessed with bacon as well, and it can be quite tricky to find the good stuff in Jakarta (turkey bacon is a decent substitute but don’t get me started on the wrongness that is beef bacon).

So naturally my hopes were extremely high when I heard that a restaurant calling itself the Baconerie opened up in Kemang. Word on the street (and by street, I mean food blogs) was that this place made serious, American-style bacon in-house with pork shipped over from Bali.

I was a little wary about making the trip down south to Kemang, having heard tales of bacon-fans lining up outside the door to get at some of the crispy pork goodness, but fortunately the cozy cafe, located in a complex on Jl. Benda, had just opened a second floor of seating so we were able to snag a table without too much trouble for a late Sunday morning brunch.

The short but focused menu at Baconerie highlights the many products made in-house by the folks at Hiddenbrooke Farms. Besides the bacon, they also do American-style breakfast sausage patties and deli meats like ham, pastrami and cajun chicken.

Breakfast is obviously a big part of the menu. The Baconerie platter (Rp. 80k) is about as good as American-style big breakfast plates get in Jakarta. It comes your choice of two meats, eggs, toast, sauteed mushrooms, salad and tomato jam. The bacon and sausage were both excellent, the bacon crisp and the sausage well-seasoned, but everything on the plate was cooked with care. The scrambled eggs were buttery and creamy, while the tomato jam added just the right level of acidity to cut through the richness of everything else.

The other famous item on the menu is the Baconerie burger (Rp. 80k), a 50-50 mix of ground beef and bacon, topped with more bacon and special sauce on a brioche bun. The burger is as juicy and bacon-y as you could hope for, though a heartier bun would help ensure customers didn’t have to finish eating it with a fork and knife.

Besides that little nitpick, the Baconnerie’s bakery does an excellent job with its other goodies, including cakes, cookies and some particularly popular scones. You can also get the restaurant’s bacon, sausage, ham and other freshly cured meats in convenient takeaway packages.
