Zhang’s way or the highway: HKers peeved as Chinese official’s motorcade drives down blocked road in wrong direction

Chinese state leader Zhang Dejiang (or DJ Zhang as he has been referred to, which makes him sound like a #millennial) has attracted controversy after his motorcade was spotted driving down a blocked road in the wrong direction.

The incident was photographed by a man surnamed Tse yesterday afternoon, while the top-ranking official (accompanied by a veritable posse) was on his way to check out Hong Kong innovations at Science Park, Apple Daily reports.

Zhang has been criticised by Hongkongers for his trip’s impact on traffic and rush hour commutes; major roads, bypasses, and even pedestrian walkways have been diverted or temporarily closed to accomodate the dignitary’s itinerary.

SCMP reports that just today, Connaught Road Central, Gloucester Road, and the Kwun Tong Bypass were all closed to allow Zhang to travel from his hotel in Wan Chai to Tseung Kwan O… where certain residents made their feelings about the dignitary known in a series of sarcastic greetings.

Roughly translated, this particular message reads, “Residents of Tseung Kwan O welcome Zhang Dejiang to block our roads.”

Don’t worry, commuters. You can breathe a collective sigh of relief now: the trip is over, and now the only thing that can ruin your Friday morning commute is, well… working on a Friday.
