Woman sentenced for cyber attack on Hong Kong police website overturns conviction

A 24-year-old woman who was ruled guilty for allegedly carrying out a series of DDoS attacks on the Hong Kong Police Force’s website in 2014 successfully appealed to have her conviction overturned yesterday at the High Court.

The woman, surnamed Chu, was previously charged for criminal damage and sentenced to 80 hours of community service. She was said to have carried out over 7,000 DDoS attacks on the website on Oct. 4 2014. The charge was overturned yesterday, reports Apple Daily.

At High Court, the judge reiterated that Chu was alleged to have carried out the attacks between 12:53am and 1:39am by the prosecution, in accordance with information provided by a computer forensics expert.

The same IP address used to carry out the attacks, however, was used to browse the same website at 1:39am — an act unrelated to the attacks, the judge said.

Because the magistrate who handed down the sentence did not take this into consideration, it was mishandled.

The attacks were carried out at the height of the Occupy Central protests, allegedly following calls made by international hackers’ network Anonymous to attack the police’s website in support of protesters, according to HK01.
