A woman who was knocked unconscious by a concrete block that fell from the ninth floor wall of an apartment block in Kwun Tong has died in hospital.

The deceased, a 56-year-old surnamed Wong, was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in an unconscious state and a critical condition on Thursday.

According to an HK01 report from yesterday, Wong died on Tuesday afternoon after six days in hospital.

The website reports that Wong is a retired civil servant who moved into a unit in one of the apartment blocks on the Tsui Ping South housing estate in March. She lived there with her siblings — an older sister, younger sister and younger brother.

At the time of the accident, she was walking home with her domestic worker after going shopping.

Police initially began an investigation into the circumstances behind the incident. It appears linked the poor state of the building’s wall, and not an intentional act.

A spokesperson for the Housing Department said the Housing Authority (HA) will normally carry out wall refurbishment works on housing estates depending on the condition of the building.

They added that the Tsui Ping South Estate was up for maintenance checks and refurbishments in phases starting from 2019 until 2020.

On.cc reports that the HA decided to fast-track the maintenance checks for the Tsui Ping South estate following the incident.
