Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of abandoning a newborn baby in an alley in To Kwa Wan on Thursday afternoon.

At around 4pm, a resident who lives on Wing Yiu Street, an alley with a row of old tenement buildings, had just gone downstairs when he heard the sounds of a baby crying, HK01 reported.

Wrapped in a pink blanket was a newborn who still had her umbilical cord attached. The resident said the baby looked to be of South Asian descent and was “very skinny.”

Authorities arrived at the scene and took the baby to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

CCTV footage captured nearby showed a woman wearing a short-sleeved top, shorts and slippers, and holding what is believed to be a baby bundled in a pink blanket. She is seen walking into a building at 18 Wing Yiu Street, and then leaving empty-handed.

Police later arrested a 29-year-old woman, whose surname transliterates as Gao, at Hung Kwong Street, a block from where the baby was found.

The woman faces a charge of abandoning a child whereby life is endangered and could face up to 10 years in jail if convicted.

Last September, authorities charged a 17-year-old woman after she was found guilty of leaving a baby’s corpse next to a rubbish bin in a Tin Shui Wai housing estate.
