A high-speed police chase through Kowloon ended in spectacular fashion after the fleeing vehicle lost control, collided with a police car, and flipped onto its side, with police forced to arrest the suspect at gunpoint to prevent him from continuing on foot.

The whole thing was so spectacular, in fact, that it appears to have literally almost given the responding officers heart attacks.

According to TVB, at around 12am this morning, a patrol car using newly issued license plate-scanning equipment picked up a white Honda SUV driving with an expired permit, and pursued the vehicle.

The South China Morning Post reported that the Honda ignored orders to stop, and sped up in an attempt to escape.

Police pursued the car for about four kilometers, from Wong Tai Sin to Kowloon Bay, until the suspect apparently lost control of the vehicle, clipped the front end of the police car, and smashed into a concrete barrier filled with shrubs.

However, as both outlets reported, the suspect didn’t stop there, attempting to smash the driver’s side window with a hard object in an effort to flee on foot.

After the 25-year-old ignored several warnings to stop, one of the officers at the scene felt compelled to draw his gun — a rarity in Hong Kong — which apparently was enough to convince the man to surrender.

Officers allegedly found a small amount of drugs and several fake license plates in the car, which they also determined to be stolen.

The man was arrested on suspicion of drug possession and car theft, as well as reckless driving and driving without a license or insurance. His 20-year-old female passenger, meanwhile, was also arrested on suspicion of car theft.

Both suffered minor injuries.

While the officers that engaged in the chase did not sustain any serious injuries in the incident, both complained of chest pains afterwards, and were sent to United Christian Hospital.
