Learning the ropes on a new job is never fun and almost always a little embarrassing, but because schadenfreude is real, one of the most popular things doing the rounds on Hong Kong social media right now is this video of a newbie traffic cop’s magnificent faceplant on the rainy roads of Lantau Island. (During a field test, no less).

The video was filmed at around 11am yesterday morning on the North Lantau Highway and posted to the popular Facebook group HK Incident at around 2:30pm. A man surnamed Chong, who was driving towards Hong Kong International Airport, caught the officer’s PK (a.k.a. “pok gai”, perhaps the most versatile and mild Cantonese curse word, which literally means “fall on the street”) on his dashcam:

In the video, a traffic police road test instructor can be seen swerving into view on a motorcycle at around the 10-second mark, swiftly followed by the test candidate, a newbie traffic cop. When the first officer slows down, however, the second one accidentally bumps into him and loses balance, falling gracefully to the ground and roly-polying out of the way of oncoming cars. All in all, fairly impressive considering the embarrassing context, although we imagine he’ll have to re-take that test.

The rookie officer was taken to North Lantau Hospital for his injuries. According to Apple Daily, the clumsy copper is new to the traffic division and has completed his driving training course and obtained a learner’s permit. The New Territories South Special Traffic Division is conducting an investigation into the accident, which should make settling in as the “new guy” lots of fun.

As Chong said, “PKing is not a big deal, but the most important part is that you PK in a funny way.”
