A 16-year-old boy briefly brought trains to a stop at Kowloon Tong MTR station yesterday evening after he jumped onto the tracks, then apologized to station staff.

According to Apple Daily, police received a report at about 6:45pm that a teenage boy had jumped onto the train tracks at the station, and was in the path of an oncoming East Rail line train headed towards Lo Wu.

Video sent to the newspaper by several eyewitnesses shows the moment two members of MTR staff ran across the station platform towards the boy, who was kneeling on the train tracks.

In another clip, a member of station staff can be heard on his walkie talkie saying that the boy is now safe, and that the train driver had stopped the train just 10 meters away from him.

A spokesperson for the MTR later confirmed to Apple Daily that staff also pressed an emergency alarm that stopped all trains from entering or leaving the station.

As station staff try and get the teen back onto the platform, he can be seen in the video apologizing in both English and Cantonese.

“I’m sorry,” he said in English. “Please fine me the HK$5,000, my life has been sad, I apologize for what I have done.”

He then says in a mixture of English and Cantonese: “I’m really sorry for what I’ve done today, I’ve disrupted the entire train, but my life is very sad, I really appreciate the train stopping, I truly thank you for stopping the train.”

Apple Daily reports that staff managed to get him off the train tracks about three minutes later. He was then sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

After a preliminary investigation, police said the case has been classed an attempted suicide.
