The number of university dropouts in Hong Kong reached a 16-year high in the 2019 to 2020 academic year.
According to annual data published by the University Grants Committee (UGC) Monday, a total of 2,121 students pursuing sub-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Hong Kong’s eight public universities suspended their studies.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University leads the list in the number of dropouts, with 505 students discontinuing their degrees that year. More than 60% were undergraduate students.

City University, University of Hong Kong and Chinese University also saw more than 300 students giving up their studies in the 2019 to 2020 academic year, which began against the backdrop of intensifying anti-government protests.
The latest available figures are a 15% jump from the year before. In the 2018 to 2019 academic year, 1,848 students dropped out from public universities in the city, data shows.
