Two Hong Kong men were arrested yesterday evening on suspicion of vandalism and assaulting a police officer in connection with a pair of unruly protests at police headquarters in Wan Chai last month.

According to the Stand News, an 18-year-old bartender, surnamed Wong was arrested for property damage after allegedly spray painting graffiti during a protest at police headquarters on June 21. Meanwhile, a 25-year-old construction worker, surnamed Shum, was arrested for allegedly attacking a police officer who was on his way to work in the midst of a second siege of police headquarters on June 26.

The officer was surrounded and punched by protesters, and was said to have suffered injuries to his face and waist.

Police had previously vowed to pursue those suspected of breaking the law during the raucous demonstrations, and one man has already been charged with assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct, and criminal damage for his alleged role in the protest on the 21st.

The police force said several crimes were committed during the protests at the headquarters last month, and that they would not rule out the possibility of making further arrests as investigations continue, HK01 reports.

The demonstrations at police headquarters marked an escalation in the city’s ongoing protest movement against a controversial extradition bill, which has since broadened to include calls for universal suffrage and an independent investigation into police’s use of force against protesters.
