One local truck driver has been praised as a good Samaritan by Hong Kong netizens for giving an 80-year-old man a ride after spotting him walking alone on a highway in the middle of the night.

Trucker Wong Tsz-hong wrote on Facebook that he was driving on Tsuen Wan Road at around 3am on Monday when he saw an elderly man walking ahead of him, right in the middle of the slow lane. After driving behind him slowly for a little while, Wong approached the man to offer assistance.

“It turns out the grandpa was trying to get home to Lei Muk Shue Estate  [in Kwai Chung] … He had originally tried to take a cab home but the driver dropped him at Texaco Road in Tsuen Wan and told him they’d arrived.” After realizing what had happened, the older man apparently decided to walk the 10.6km distance back home as he didn’t have enough cash left to pay for another taxi.

Speaking to HK01, Wong said, “At first he didn’t want my help, but I told him it would only take me 10 minutes to drive him home. If I left him there, he’d have walked for hours.” Despite saying that the elderly man was “lucid”, Wong made sure to confirm with a security guard that he was really a Lei Muk Shue resident after dropping him off.

“It’s so simple just to ask. There are cases of old people missing reported everyday, it might have been him!” Wong said.

Wong, who’s been a truck driver for seven years, said he’d seen some “worrisome things” late at night. “Cyclists and old people are out on the highways a lot. It’s easy for us in our big vehicles to overlook them… Next time you see something that doesn’t seem right, stop and check. You could save someone’s life.”

Wong’s post has been shared widely on social media, with netizens praising him for his actions and thanking him for potentially saving the man’s life.
