A traffic cop who was killed after being hit by a truck on a highway in East Kowloon in the early hours of Thursday morning was not wearing a reflective vest at the time, according to reports.

Fifty-one-year-old senior constable Lum Hoi-wan, was responding to an earlier car accident involving a Mercedes Benz when he was hit by a truck.

Dash cam footage posted online from one vehicle passing through the area shows Lum holding a flashlight and directing traffic with another officer just moments before he was hit by the truck.

Although he was not wearing a reflective vest, there were reflective words on his police jacket and the flashing blue lights on the police vehicle were on.

According to Apple Daily, Lum was standing behind a police vehicle and was collecting traffic cones when the truck rammed into him.

Police arrested a 58-year-old truck driver surnamed Wu on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, the newspaper reported. Police confirmed that Wu was not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

It was reported yesterday that Lum was declared dead at the scene, however, according to Commissioner of Police Stephen Lo Wai-chung, Lum suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead shortly afterwards at around 6:04am.

According to hk01, Lum served in the Hong Kong police force for 29 years, and first joined in 1988. He leaves behind a wife and a 19-year-old son.
