Taxi driver gets jail term for overcharging passengers

Cab driver, Wong Wah-wai, has been sentenced to three-months in jail and banned from driving for eight-months, for overcharging an undercover police officer.

The undercover officer was pretending to be a tourist when he boarded the taxi at the Central Peak Tram station to go to the Peak.

Wong did not use the meter on the cab, instead asked to charge HK$150 for a trip that would have only costed around HK$42.

This is Wong’s third offence and therefore, time behind bars was necessary. The judge also said that these offences are serious as they affect the reputation and image of Hong Kong as a tourist destination.
