Tai Po landlady rents out bunk bed to separate tenants for HKD3.2K and up

Just when you thought rental prices in Hong Kong couldn’t possibly get any worse, a Tai Po landlady is now looking for tenants to rent the top of a bunk bed for HKD3,200 and the bottom for HKD3,600.

The unnamed landlady is offering said bunk bed, housed in a 90 sq. ft. room, in her two-storey village house. The rent includes a new mattress and wi-fi.

Speaking to Sky Post, the landlady said the bottom bunk has already been let. Contracts last a year; tenants pay three months’ rent upfront and are expected to contribute about HKD150 every two months towards utilities bills. No commissions or management fees are needed.

She tells the paper that the bunk bed rental targets “fresh grads” working in the area, who don’t want to deal with a long commute. The property is a 10-minute minibus journey from Tai Po MTR station.

The landlady also expressed her desire to cultivate a “dorm-like” environment for young people.

Not everyone’s into the idea of an overpriced frat house, however.

Some netizens accused the landlady of being greedy in asking HKD3,600 for a bunk bed “shared with a stranger”, no less.

However, CEO of Midland Realty’s residential section, Bo Siu-ming, told the paper that the rate “isn’t really that expensive”.
