An 18-year-old has died after being struck by lightning on a hike during Monday’s storm.

Ian Lo Go-yin was hiking along stage of the MacLehose Trail in Ma On Shan with five friends when the tragedy occurred, according to Apple Daily. He was knocked unconscious by lightning shortly before 1pm.

Emergency personnel said that Lo wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a heartbeat when they arrived on the scene 20 minutes later. A Government Flying Service helicopter transported him to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, and efforts to resuscitate him in transit were unsuccessful.

Lo had just graduated from South Island School in Aberdeen, and was preparing to attend university in the fall. His parents, who were on holiday in Japan on Monday, rushed back to Hong Kong.

An amber rainstorm alert and a thunderstorm alert were in effect at the time of the incident.

There were 568 lightning strikes in the eastern part of the New Territories during that hour, compared to just 36 the next hour, according to the Hong Kong Observatory’s records.

If hiking during a storm, experts advise removing metal objects and phones from your body, and seeking shelter under low trees if possible.
