Shoplifter’s leg tied to bamboo scaffolding after being pursued by five men

Sham Shui Po’s gadget market in Fuk Wa Street is full of new age gizmos and tech.

It was also the site of some old-school justice this week, when a group of men performed a citizens’ arrest on an alleged shoplifter, and tied him to a bamboo pole.

The chaotic scenes were captured in a video posted by Apple Daily today.

It shows five men — including two members of staff  from the store where the alleged theft occurred and three passers-by — apprehending a man, with one man holding the almost topless suspect from behind as another ties his right foot to one of the bamboo scaffolding poles.

His shoes, it seems, appear to have come off during the fracas, which happened on Sunday at around 4pm, according to the newspaper.

According to the outlet, the suspect, a 32-year-old man, allegedly tried to steal a cell phone case that was about HK$200 (US$25).

During the melee, one eye-witness, surnamed Yu told the newspaper that he heard the suspect shout that his foot was broken, prompting the five men to untie him, saying: “If you sit down I will release you.”

After the suspect was untied, he attempted again to break free, but failed and was held down until police arrived at the scene, with officers arresting him on suspicion of shoplifting.

The newspaper also reported that one of the five men who apprehended the suspect, a 68-year-old shop clerk surnamed Chan, injured his hand as he was holding down the suspect.

He received some medical attention, but did not want to be sent to the hospital.
