A woman has been handed a 12-month probation order for holding up traffic while handing out scads of free cash to people in Sham Shui Po.

Cheng Tsz-ki, 20, had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of public nuisance in relation to the incident, in which she was filmed handing out HK$1,000 (US$129) notes at the intersection of Nam Cheong Street and Yu Chau Street in December of 2018.

Cheng’s stunt had attracted extra attention — even more attention than handing out free money typically attracts — because at the time she was the girlfriend of a famous internet personality called Lam Hak-lam, aka “Dragon Heart,” who had previously been referred to as the “Nicholas Tse of Victoria Park” because of his resemblance to the entertainer-turned chef (what is fame these days?).

The pair have since split up.

During a hearing at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court this afternoon, Cheng’s defense attorney urged the magistrate to hand down a light sentence, citing a positive probation report on Cheng and adding that she had been influenced by her then-boyfriend, that dastardly Dragon Heart, Headline Daily reports.

The defense said that Cheng’s physical and mental health suffered while she was dating Dragon Heart, and that her mother had urged her daughter to seek treatment.

Acting Principal Magistrate Ada Yim ultimately decided to hand down the 12-month probation order.
