Pedestrian killed by falling bamboo scaffolding at Tsuen Wan building site

A 62-year-old Hong Kong man was tragically killed in a freak accident today when a falling piece of bamboo scaffolding hit him on the head in Tsuen Wan.

At around 11am, the man was walking along the waterfront promenade at Wing Shun Street, near Tsuen Wan West MTR Station, when a seven- to eight-metre-long bamboo pole fell from a nearby building site and struck him on the head, Ming Pao reports. The 62-year-old fell unconscious and was heavily injured.

Passersby called emergency services, who rushed the victim to hospital for treatment, but he was certified dead soon afterwards.

The bamboo which killed the man had reportedly fallen from the “Pavilia Bay” residential development site above Tsuen Wan West Station, which is a joint project by New World Development and Vanke Property (Hong Kong).

The site’s foreman was taken into questioning by investigating police officers from the Tsuen Wan District crime squad.
