Baggio Leung and Yau Wai-ching, the rebel lawmakers who were barred from taking their seats last year, have been arrested.

According to a statement Yau shared on Facebook, the pair were picked up at their homes this morning at 7am and arrested on suspicion of participating in an unlawful assembly. Their former administrative assistants have reportedly also been brought to the police station for questioning.

Leung and Yau’s arrests relate to the November 2 incident where they tried to enter a legislative meeting against orders, after storming into the Legislative Council chamber without permission. A scuffle outside the meeting saw four security guards injured.

In October, the pair were barred from entering the council chamber pending a judicial review into their oath-taking ceremony, during which they displayed banners and flags reading “Hong Kong is NOT China” and used a derogatory wartime slur to refer to China.

On November 7, Beijing delivered an unprecedented interpretation of Hong Kong Basic Law which deemed that legislators who were not “sincere and solemn” while being sworn in would be disqualified from office and forbidden from retaking their oaths.
