Mystery surrounds death of 19-year-old man hit by taxi in Wong Tai Sin

There is confusion in the Hong Kong press over whether a taxi driver rammed and killed a 19-year-old pedestrian or whether the teen was already in the road when hit by the cab, having possibly been struck by another vehicle previously.

On Sunday, Hong Kong police released a statement reporting the fatal traffic accident in Wong Tai Sin.

“About 1.50am, a taxi driven by a 68-year-old man was travelling along New Clear Water Bay Road uphill. Upon reaching near the junction with Fung Shing Street, It reportedly rammed into the [19-year-old] man,” the release states.

It added that the young man sustained serious head injuries and was certified dead at the scene.

However, according to hk01.com, the taxi driver, who has not yet been arrested, claims he was driving with two passengers in his cab when he felt the car run over “some object”.

He added that on exiting the vehicle he saw a young man’s body in a pool of blood, and that he and his passengers suspected the victim had already been hit by another car as there was no dent in his taxi.

The website goes on to report that other drivers say they saw a man lying in the road before accident.

Some sources are reporting that the victim, apparently surnamed Chan, had a history of emotional problems, according to his family.

Meanwhile, Oriental Daily claims to have dashcam footage from a third party that shows the man lying in the road before being hit by the taxi.

At the time of writing, Hong Kong police has not released a further statement. They have appealed for witnesses to call +852 2305-7500.
