Mother dead, toddler in critical condition after ‘attempted murder-suicide’ in Kwun Tong

A two-year-old boy is fighting for his life in hospital after being thrown out a window yesterday by his mother, who also plunged from a fourth-story apartment and later died.

Speaking today, a spokesperson from the government’s Information Services Department said the toddler remained in critical condition in a hospital.

The case has been classified a murder-suicide by police, who found knives and a suicide note in the apartment.

According to a police statement, officers found the boy, 2, and his mother, 35, on the ground below their fourth-floor home in Kwun Tong’s Yau Tong Estate after responding to reports from residents about 2.50pm yesterday.

The woman, identified by local media reports as Leung Ho-yee, and her son were rushed to United Christian Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital respectively. Leung, a fashion designer, was certified dead at 3.24pm.

The single mother of two children was suffering from postnatal depression, according to Kwun Tong district councillor Lui Tung-hai, who attended the scene and spoke with police.

Leung’s daughter, surnamed Lee, was staying with her grandmother at the time.

An initial investigation revealed cut wounds on the woman’s neck and hands. Lui said the wounds were self-inflicted.

He said Leung was discovered covered in blood by her domestic worker, who ran and asked for help from a security guard.

After the worker departed, Leung threw her son out of the window and followed herself, he said, adding she had left a suicide note on the table.

He said the Social Welfare Department had reached the family members of Leung and confirmed that she had attempted suicide before.
