Hongkongers, add oil! We’re nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!
Norwegian parliamentarian Guri Melby, a member of the liberal Venstre party, announced her nomination of “the people of Hong Kong” for the prestigious award in a tweet today.
“I have nominated the people of Hong Kong, who risk their lives and security every day to stand up for freedom of speech and basic democracy, to the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020,” Melby wrote in the tweet. “I hope this will be further encouragement to the movement: #StandWithHongKong.”

That Hongkongers would be nominated for the Peace Prize just as the city’s long-running protests are escalating in violence might strike some as ironic, and according to Norway’s Aftenposten, the politician said she hoped Hongkongers would keep up their months-long struggle in a nonviolent manner.
RTHK reports that Melby visited Hong Kong last month, and was brought up to speed on the city’s long-running and increasingly violent protest movement by local lawmakers Charles Mok and Dennis Kwok. The trip obviously made quite an impact.
Current members of national assemblies and sitting heads of state are among those eligible to make nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, with the organization typically keeping information on nominees secret for 50 years.
