Man who ran into rush hour traffic to save lost special needs student hailed as a hero

A local man has been hailed as a hero by netizens, after a video of him running into moving traffic in order to lead a lost special needs student to safety was shared widely on social media.

During rush hour yesterday morning, at around 8:40am, motorcyclist Andy Wong was travelling along Po Shun Road in Tseung Kwan O when he saw a young child in school uniform walking on the side of the fast lane.

Seemingly without a moment’s hesitation, Wong swiftly parked his bike, ran into moving traffic, led the child to safety, and called the police.

Wong posted dashcam footage of the incident on Facebook with the caption, “Is Hong Kong really so cold and uncaring now? I saw this kid walking on the middle of the road. How is it that not one person stopped driving in order to find out what was going on?”.

He told commenters that the child was a special needs student, and had apparently been trying to walk to school using the “school bus route”. “From the sound of what the police officers were saying, this isn’t the first time [the kid] has gotten lost,” Wong said.

Wong’s clip was later shared on a popular Facebook page for local motorcyclists, where netizens heaped praise on the big-hearted biker, calling him a “true hero”. “Hong Kong is lucky to have you,” one person said. “You have not only saved this child’s life, but also their family’s life,” another commenter wrote.

After the overwhelmingly positive response, Wong said, “Thank you very much to all of you for saying so many nice things. If you keep praising me, I’ll go red. To be honest, I was just trying to do my bit.” What a stand up bloke.
