A 56-year-old man was crushed to death by a taxi involved in a collision with another taxi early Monday morning.

Police told Apple Daily that the tragic accident happened in Yau Ma Tei around 3am.

A 23-year-old driver, surnamed Cheng, crashed his taxi into another taxi driven by a 67-year-old man, surnamed Kong, at the intersection of Nathan Road and Kansu Street around 3am. Kong’s taxi flew onto the sidewalk and pinned Andy Yau Chi-man against a metal store gate, The Standard reports.

The drivers and bystanders rushed to Yau’s aid, but he was unresponsive. Yau, a retired economics teacher, was pronounced at the hospital within the hour.

A passenger in Kong’s taxi also went to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries to his hand and shoulder.

Cheng, the 23-year-old driver, was arrested for dangerous driving causing death.

Taxis as a vehicle class recorded the second highest number of accidents in 2016, after private cars, according to the Transport Department. Twenty-two people died.

According to Apple Daily, Yau was a secondary teacher who had taught at La Salle College and Diocesan Boys’ School — two of the best high schools in Hong Kong. He moved to the UK in 1997 and retired a few years ago.

The newspaper reported that he and his wife had divorced, and he was living along in Kwai Chung. Police do not yet know why Yau was in Yau Ma Tei in the early hours of the morning.

Police are urging anyone with information about Monday’s accident to call 3661 9000 or 3661 9058.
