A man was arrested on Christmas Eve after being caught on camera sucker punching a bus driver for the alleged crime of startling him by starting his vehicle’s engine.

The man, a 60-year-old surnamed Lam, was arrested on suspicion of common assault, according to Apple Daily, though as you’ll find out shortly, at least one witness accused the victim of having thrown the first blow.

The newspaper reports that Lam — who was wearing a black jacket with white stripes — got off a bus that had stopped near the Hin Keng Estate bus terminus in Sha Tin at about 9pm.

As he crossed the road, the newspaper reports that Lam walked in front of a parked bus just as its engines rumbled to life as it prepared to depart.

Initially startled, fear quickly turned into (admittedly head-scratching) anger, which led to Lam standing in the middle of the road and blocking the bus’s path.

A war of words then erupted between Lam and the bus’s 40-year-old driver, surnamed Tsang, and video posted online shows a middle-aged woman positioning herself between the two men in a bid to prevent them from brawling.

At one point in the video, the woman can be heard telling Lam that he had “drunk a lot.” But here’s where the narrative gets a bit tricky.

In the video, the woman can also be heard telling Tsang, the bus driver, “you’ve hit someone, just let it go, stop shouting,” suggesting he may have landed the first blow. Tsang, in reply, then yells at Lam “you charged towards me!” Hmmm.

Unfortunately for Lam, none of that made it on camera.

At this point in the video, Lam can be seen picking up a child who was watching the argument.

He sets the child aside, faces Tsang, who has his back to him at this point, and proceeds to sucker punch him in the back of the neck/shoulder area.

Tsang can be seen in the video lying on the ground holding his neck, while other people can be heard telling others to call the police and telling Lam “you’re going to jail.”

A KMB spokesperson confirmed to the newspaper that Tsang sustained a minor injury to his right arm, and that the station master for the bus terminus called the police.
