A man who randomly stabbed two men with a sharp weapon on the streets of Yau Ma Tei this morning has been arrested.

The perpetrator reportedly stabbed a 28-year-old man, surnamed Lo, in the back while he was putting money in a parking meter at 11am on Portland Street, near Man Ming Lane, Apple Daily reports.

The suspect then ran 280 meters away and attempted to attack an elderly man waiting at a bus stop further along Portland Street, near Pitt Street. A 36-year-old passerby, surnamed Lam, intervened and was stabbed in his right armpit. The two injured men were sent to Kwong Wah Hospital for treatment and are reported to be lucid and in stable condition.

At 12:55pm, police arrested the assailant in a tenement building on Parkes Street after receiving another report about a weapon-wielding man in the area. During a press conference at 4:30pm, Inspector Lau Kar-ho said the man speaks Cantonese and is believed to be of Chinese descent, but has not provided valid identification. The weapon used to wound Lo and Lam has not been found, and Lau says it is not clear what exactly it is yet based on their injuries.

Neither Lo nor Lam know the suspect, according to reports. One of the man’s neighbours told Apple Daily reporters that he may be mentally challenged.

Police have classified the incident as a case of “wounding”. Detectives from the Yau Tsim police district have launched an investigation.
