Police have arrested one man suspected to be among a group of more than a dozen men who barged into a Mong Kok guesthouse early yesterday morning and robbed two mainland men of HK$2.3 million (US$294,825) in cash.

At least 14 robbers are believed to have taken part in the overnight raid, during which the victims were roughed up and had a backpack containing the sizable chunk of cash snatched, according to reports.

Officers later arrested one man in Kowloon City where they seized HK$40,000 (US$5,100), and continue to hunt for suspects, RTHK reported this morning.

Previous reports by The Standard mentioned that 13 suspects, aged between 30 and 40, entered the B&B Mongkok Hotel on the 16th floor of Kingland Apartments on Nathan Road shortly before 1am yesterday.

Two of the men then barged into the room where the two mainlanders were staying, “slapped and manhandled” the pair, and then fled with a backpack containing the cash and an iPhone worth some HK$8,000 (US$1,025).

The goods belonged to a victim surnamed Chen, who was understood to be planning to buy electronic parts in Hong Kong, the Standard reported.

Apple Daily reported that, prior to their raid, the group had waited close to a nearby restaurant, which was also frequented by the two victims, who had been living at the hotel for 10 days.

The restaurant owner said the mainlanders would often arrive to eat and drink brandy. Of the group of suspects, he said he didn’t see the men carrying weapons.

The victims, understandably, have since checked out. If they are inclined to write a TripAdvisor review, we suspect they’ll deduct a few stars for their troubles.
