In today’s jaded, cynical world, innocence is something to be cherished, preserved at all costs. That’s why the conversation we’re about to have with the People’s Daily is so hard.
This morning, the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, posted a photo of what it believed to be zany tourists wearing animal hats to ward off the wintry Harbin air.
Brrr! Tourists wear funny animal-like hats to withstand the cold in Harbin, Northeast China's #Heilongjiang province, on Feb 12, when temperatures fell as low as -22C pic.twitter.com/338jMremlV

However, as Twitter users were quick to note, it’s a little more complicated than that. Yes, it looks like those kooky tourists are, in actual fact, furries.
You see, People’s Daily, human sexuality is a rich tapestry, woven of many threads. And one of those threads is getting your freaky-deaky kicks by dressing up as plush animals.
First, let’s cover some basics, People’s Daily. Furries are people with, shall we say, an interest in anthropomorphic animals. Sometimes that interest manifests itself as having sexual intercourse in animal costumes, a practice known as “yiffing” in the community.
Now, we don’t mean to be unfair or prudish, People’s Daily. Not all furries are fetishists with a thing for anthropomorphic animals.
But then again, some are. A survey at a furry convention in 2013 found that 96 percent of male furries and 78 percent of female furries watched furry pornography. (Though many also insist their interest in the subculture is primarily non-sexual.)
But just look at that leash in the photo, People’s Daily. There’s more than a whiff of BDSM coming off of that.
BDSM, People’s Daily, is another thread in that rich tapestry that we’ll cover another day.
