Local teacher Ada Tsang made history as the first Hong Kong woman to summit Mount Everest over the weekend.

It seems the third time was the charm for Tsang, who scaled the world’s highest mountain with over 70 others — including fellow Hongkonger Elton Ng — on Sunday morning. A Facebook page run by Tsang’s former students confirmed that she had reached the 8,848-meter peak at around 6am local time, “after seven years” of preparation and two unsuccessful attempts.

The ambitious educator previously attempted the feat in 2014 and 2015, but was thwarted by deadly avalanches both times which suspended all expeditions up the famed peak. Tsang sustained a permanent fracture to the right side of her skull in the latter incident.

Since her success on Sunday, Tsang has been making her way back down to base camp. An update posted to her student-run Facebook page this afternoon said she and her fellow climbers had safely reached the base camp and would be flying to Kathmandu soon.

Tsang, who formerly taught life education at CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School in Ma On Shan, has been on a quest to climb Mount Everest for seven years, according to her students. The dedicated Hongkonger quit her job last month in preparation for her third attempt.
