A group of lifeguards have won over the hearts of netizens after photos were posted online showing them rescuing a black kite that was spotted in a bad state in the middle of the sea.

According to a Facebook post by the Lifeguards Union, the bird was spotted in the water off of Golden Beach in Tuen Mun at around 6pm yesterday.

One of the lifeguards ventured out in a kayak to rescue the kite and brought it back to shore, where the rest of the gang got busy toweling off the surprisingly chill bird of prey and drying its feathers with a hairdryer.

After about 30 minutes, they gave the black kite some water, set it in the doorway, and watched as it quickly flew off.

Social media users, meanwhile, left comments on the Facebook post praising the lifeguards as heroes.

The black kite is the most common raptor in Hong Kong and can be seen year round. It’s not known how many black kites there are in the SAR, but according to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, several hundred of them can be found at dusk and dawn around Magazine Gap Road in the Mid-levels.
