In the wee hours of today, one clever young 7-Eleven clerk apparently thwarted not one, but two thieves within a 30-minute period.

The first attempted theft occurred at 1:15am, when a 45-year-old woman surnamed Lee snuck a bottle of almond milk tea and a bottle of walnut cream drink (worth a total of HKD28) into her bag and left the store. The 18-year-old clerk, surnamed Chow, chased Lee outside and called the police, who arrested her, the Hong Kong Economic Times reports.

Roughly half an hour later, Chow called the police after he spotted another customer leaving the shop with stolen stock — this time, the oh-so-alluring items were two Garden brand cakes worth a grand total of HKD15.40.

The suspect, a 38-year-old man surnamed Tsang, apparently unwrapped the cakes and calmly ate them while waiting for the police to arrive. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

When police officers searched Tsang, they found a number of items which had been stolen from other people — including wallets and ID cards. Unfortunately for Tsang, none of the ID cards he had actually belonged to him, and he was charged with failure to produce identity documents (on top of “Garden variety” theft).
