A 33-year-old knife-wielding man was arrested at gunpoint this afternoon outside his son’s kindergarten in Sau Mau Ping.

At around 12pm, the headmistress of a preschool at Shun Tin Estate, just off Shun On Road, called police to say that a barefoot man was standing outside the school and “injuring his own hand”, reports Oriental Daily.

A video clip submitted to Oriental Daily by a witness shows the man, a 33-year-old surnamed Liu, being confronted by four police officers, two of whom are armed. In the clip, police repeatedly ask Liu to lower his weapon, in response to which Liu can be seen holding the 22cm-long knife to his neck and heard saying, “I want to die now”.

After facing off against the officers for about three minutes, Liu asked if officers could guarantee his safety before dropping his knife and being led away to a police van. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and taken to Sau Mau Ping police station for questioning.

According to Apple Daily, Liu lives at Tin Wan House on Shun Tin Estate and is the father of a boy enrolled at the kindergarten. Liu reportedly wanted to pick up his son but was told by a teacher that the child hadn’t attended school, and was turned away before the incident.

The school’s headmistress, surnamed Lee, told reporters she had all the doors and windows locked after hearing about the barefoot knifeman. All 120 pupils and staff who were present at the time are safe and eating lunch at the time. Liu’s son has been confirmed safe by his mother.
