‘Justice for Elis’ campaign set up to raise money for crushed maid’s family

A donation portal to collect money for the family of the domestic worker killed by a falling concrete slab has been established as the government reclassifies the death as “manslaughter”.

The “Justice for Elis” campaign page has been set up by HK Helpers in an attempt to draw both more funds and more awareness to the case.

Elis Kurniasih, 33, died last night, five days after a 60kg sill fell on her from the fifth floor of a building in North Point.

She was reportedly sleeping on a roof terrace belonging to the Sunlight Employment Agency at the time.

A spokesperson for the Mission for Migrant Workers group said, “Indonesian domestic workers [at the employment agency] are said to sleep on the floor with mats and no proper bed. Cooking is done at the rooftop of the said old building. Although there is a lift, they are allegedly made to take the stairs since only tenants and staff are allowed to use the lift.”

Elis’ family is seeking legal advice but is reportedly under pressure from the agency to “settle”.

Yesterday police confirmed that a manslaughter investigation is underway.

Placards and letter writing templates can also been downloaded from the campaign site.
